The San Francisco Giants have traded left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers and cash considerations to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor league right-hander Braxton Roxby, marking the end of the “Rogers twins” era in the Bay Area. Rogers, 34, had shared the Giants’ bullpen with his identical twin, Tyler, since signing a three-year, $33 million deal in 2023. The two had distinct pitching styles—Taylor with a traditional left-handed delivery and Tyler as a right-handed sidearm thrower—and became just the fourth set of twins to pitch on the same MLB team.

Taylor Rogers had a solid first year with the Giants, posting a 3.83 ERA over 51 2/3 innings in 2023. However, in 2024, rookie left-hander Erik Miller took over key relief situations, pushing Rogers into a lesser role despite his strong 2.40 ERA over 60 innings. The Giants placed him on waivers midseason, but he went unclaimed due to the $12 million he’s owed in 2025. While San Francisco will cover part of his salary in the trade, the move helps them clear some financial space.

This transaction gives the Giants flexibility under the $241 million luxury tax threshold, which they exceeded in 2024 for the first time since 2018. While they aren’t expected to pursue another high-priced free agent following their record deal for shortstop Willy Adames in December, they may use the savings for short-term veteran signings, similar to their one-year contract with Justin Verlander.

Trading Rogers also leaves Miller as the only left-handed reliever on the Giants’ 40-man roster, creating an opportunity for Joey Lucchesi. The Newark native, who previously pitched for the Padres and Mets, recently signed a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.

Roxby, 25, has pitched four minor league seasons in the Reds’ system, recording a 4.30 ERA with 233 strikeouts and 79 walks over 169 2/3 innings between High-A and Double-A. He will likely serve as organizational depth for the Giants’ pitching staff.
