The Los Angeles Dodgers moved quickly on Monday to address the absence of Tommy Edman, who has been sidelined for nearly a month with no return in sight. In response, the team completed a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.

According to the Dodgers’ official X (formerly Twitter) account, the reigning World Series champions acquired outfielder from Toronto in exchange for cash considerations.

Edman has been dealing with a persistent ankle injury since April 29, when he tweaked it during the sixth inning of a game against the Miami Marlins. At the time, many assumed manager Dave Roberts had pulled him because the game was already out of hand, but it was later revealed Edman left due to the injury.

On May 9, Roberts mentioned that Edman was only about “80%” recovered. With both Edman and outfielder Teoscar Hernández out, the Dodgers needed to act. Roberts confirmed after Sunday’s win over the Arizona Diamondbacks that Edman’s recovery was not progressing as hoped.

In the meantime, Freddie Freeman helped carry the offense in the 8-1 Mother’s Day victory, launching a home run in the process. But to help fill the void left by Edman, the Dodgers turned to Berroa.

Berroa, now joining his second MLB team since 2024, was originally signed by Toronto as an international free agent in July 2016. He began his professional career in the Dominican Summer League and later advanced through the minors, playing for the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats and Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

He made his major league debut with the Blue Jays on June 23, 2024, and is known for his speed—swiping six bases during his brief MLB stint last year, and 47 with the Bisons in 2023.

In Edman’s absence, Roberts has had to tinker with the lineup, even giving Korean infielder Hyeseong Kim a shot at second base on Cinco de Mayo. Now, Berroa will don Dodger blue, aiming to bring speed and versatility to the roster.
