Speculation suggests he could be seeking a deal worth over $230 million—a hefty figure for a player whose legitimacy as a franchise quarterback has occasionally been questioned.
General manager John Lynch addressed the situation, telling reporters that while the team avoids public negotiations, recent talks have been positive. “We don’t like discussing negotiations publicly, and that’s always been my stance since my playing days,” Lynch said, according to 49ers Web Zone. “But I will say we’re having productive conversations. When it gets done, we’ll all know. Hopefully sooner rather than later, though hope isn’t a strategy.”
Could Purdy Command $250M?
Although the 49ers may hesitate to commit that much, another team could be willing to offer it if Purdy eventually hits free agency. Delaying a deal could also drive his price even higher, especially in a market where many top-paid QBs lack MVPs or Super Bowl wins.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay predicts Purdy could land a six-year, $324 million deal, citing his rapid rise and role in guiding San Francisco to the Super Bowl in just his second season. Given recent deals like Kirk Cousins’ $45 million per year, Kay believes Purdy’s value should be closer to the likes of Josh Allen.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano even reported that Purdy’s extension might exceed $55 million annually, reflecting the value he brings to the team now and going forward.
Purdy Holds the Leverage
Ultimately, the 49ers may have little choice. If they believe he’s worth a long-term investment north of $300 million, they’ll need to commit. If not, they risk instability at the most critical position in football. While Purdy might not be the league’s top quarterback, his production—9,518 passing yards, 64 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions since taking over in 2022—gives him strong negotiating power.
