Former New England Patriots Super Bowl championhas passed away at the age of 51, the team announced on Thursday.
A third-round pick in the 1996 NFL Draft out of Appalachian State,he was originally selected by the Buffalo Bills. Over his career, he played for several teams, including the Eagles, Washington, Patriots, and Texans.
As a defensive back, Stevens recorded 301 tackles, 13 interceptions, and one sack during his time in the NFL. In the 2001 season, he appeared in 15 of 16 regular-season games for New England, starting four. That team famously launched the Patriots’ dynasty with a shocking 20-17 Super Bowl victory over the Rams.
In 2007, Stevens was left paralyzed from the waist down following a motorcycle accident but later regained movement with the help of a ReWalk device.
A standout in college, Stevens was a two-time All-American and was inducted into Appalachian State’s Hall of Fame.
