The Chargers are bringing back their core group of safeties, officially re-signing veteran Tony Jefferson to a one-year deal. The former Cardinals and Ravens safety returned from retirement before the 2024 season and played some of his best football late in the year, stepping in for the injured Elijah Molden.

Jefferson wrapped up the 2024 season with 27 total tackles, one tackle for loss, and started four games while playing in eight. Alongside starters Derwin James and Alohi Gilman, the trio helped maintain one of the NFL’s top safety units after Elijah Molden’s injury in Week 15 against the Buccaneers.
Jefferson will return to Los Angeles for another year, continuing to share his experience and leadership with a position group filled with players either in their prime or just starting to find their rhythm in the NFL.
For the Chargers to improve in 2025, it’s a significant advantage to keep this safety group intact, as they demonstrated strong chemistry and success together last season.
