Former NFL coach Jeff Fisher is reportedly the leading candidate to replace Eddie George as head coach at HBCU Tennessee State. According to Walter K. Friedman, Fisher is expected to step into the role after George left for Bowling Green earlier this year.
Fisher is a seasoned football coach best known for his lengthy tenure in the NFL. His coaching career began in 1985 as a defensive backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles under Buddy Ryan. He later became the Eagles’ defensive coordinator before taking on the same role with the Los Angeles Rams.
Fisher’s most memorable season came in 1999 when he led the Titans to a 13-3 record and a Super Bowl XXXIV appearance, narrowly missing a game-tying touchdown against the St. Louis Rams, falling just one yard short.
Renowned for his teams’ physicality and strong defensive play, Fisher amassed a 142-120 regular-season record with the Oilers/Titans. In 2012, he became head coach of the St. Louis Rams, overseeing their transition to Los Angeles before his tenure ended in 2016 due to mixed results.
Across his career, including the playoffs, Fisher holds a 173-165-1 record. While often criticized for inconsistency and multiple 8-8 seasons, he remains respected for his leadership and longevity in the league.
Fisher also has a personal connection to Tennessee State, as his son, Brandon, served as Eddie George’s defensive coordinator for four seasons, playing a crucial role in revitalizing the program. Now, Fisher appears ready to take over the historic program, which has a rich legacy of producing NFL Draft picks and football legends.
