Cincinnati Reds reliever has reportedly declined an invitation to represent Cuba in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. MLB insider Francys Romero noted that the Cuban Baseball Federation reached out to the right-hander, but he turned down the opportunity.
Players opting out of the WBC isn’t unusual, with reasons often ranging from family obligations to injury concerns. As for Zulueta, only he knows the exact motivation. Still, it’s fair to speculate that he may be prioritizing his standing with the Reds heading into 2026. Having logged just four big-league appearances this season, Zulueta might view spring as a crucial audition for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Acquired from the Blue Jays ahead of the 2024 season, Zulueta has bounced between Triple-A and the majors. He’s built a reputation around his high-velocity fastball, which pushes the upper-90s, complemented by a sinker, changeup, and curveball. In Triple-A this season with Louisville, the 27-year-old has struck out over 30% of batters faced and posted a 3.59 ERA.
His WBC decision could be a strategic one. Remaining in Goodyear for spring training would give him valuable time with Reds coaches and more chances to prove himself while other players are away at the tournament.
Zulueta still has a minor-league option left, but he’d no doubt prefer the Reds not to exercise it in 2026.
If skipping the WBC truly is part of his plan to lock down a permanent MLB role, it could be a smart career move. Time will tell next spring if the gamble pays off.
