The Edmonton Oilers are already riding high after defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 4 of their second-round playoff series. Now, their outlook is even brighter with encouraging updates on a couple of injured players who may return sooner than expected.

According to TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch shared that defenseman Mattias Ekholm could be ready for the next round, noting that he has resumed light skating. Edmonton Sports Talk’s Tom Gazzola echoed the positive news, though he added that Ekholm is still likely a few weeks away from a full return.

In addition, goaltender Calvin Pickard is considered day-to-day, a welcome update after earlier speculation suggested he might miss another week. His status improved just ahead of Stuart Skinner’s shutout on Monday.

What Could Ekholm and Pickard Add to the Lineup?
The idea of a fully healthy Ekholm and the reliable tandem of Pickard and Skinner is an exciting prospect for Oilers fans. The defensive unit has already performed admirably in Ekholm’s absence, with the sixth spot filled by either Troy Stecher or Ty Emberson. But adding Ekholm to a rotation that includes Evan Bouchard, Darnell Nurse, Brett Kulak, Jake Walman, and John Klingberg would give Edmonton one of the most complete blue-line groups in the NHL.

Pickard has been a standout during this postseason run, stringing together six consecutive solid appearances and proving himself to be one of the league’s top backup goalies.

With the team gaining momentum and nearing full strength, the Oilers are shaping up to be serious contenders for the Stanley Cup.
