Following the conclusion of their three-day rookie minicamp, the Denver Broncos made several roster changes on Monday, including the re-signing of long snapper Zach Triner.
Triner, a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 2020 Super Bowl-winning team, had initially signed with Denver earlier this offseason. However, he was released to make room for the team’s rookie signings. Now, he’s been brought back — a move that raises questions about the Broncos’ long snapper situation.
“Source said that long snapper Zach Triner, released Friday by the #Broncos, is indeed signing back with them,” reported Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette on May 12 via X. “Not sure yet what Broncos are doing to create roster spot for him. Triner is needed as Mitch Fraboni works his way back from back issue not considered major.”
Tomasson had earlier predicted Triner’s potential return once rookie camp concluded, stating on May 9 that his release was likely a procedural move to clear a spot, as Triner — being a veteran — wasn’t eligible to participate in the minicamp.
Fraboni Injury Opens Competition for Long Snapper Role
The Broncos re-signed Mitch Fraboni in March on a three-year, $4.1 million deal. The former undrafted free agent earned a spot on the roster in 2022 and appeared in four games that season. In 2023, he garnered All-Pro votes and was in Pro Bowl consideration.
Despite that, Triner is seen as real competition. When Triner first joined the team in April, both the Denver Post’s Parker Gabriel and 9News’ Mike Klis noted that he posed a serious challenge to Fraboni’s starting role.
“Triner’s a vet, but worth keeping in mind the #Broncos gave Mitch Fraboni $1.7 million in guarantees this spring… not you’re-safe-no-matter-what money,” Gabriel posted, pointing to the team’s cautious confidence in Fraboni.
As Fraboni recovers from a minor back issue, the door may be open for Triner to make his case for the long snapper job in Denver.
