Exciting developments continue for South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley, who is set to release her new book, Uncommon Favor, adding to an already remarkable year.
The book’s launch comes on the heels of South Carolina’s deep NCAA Tournament run, which ended in the championship game with a loss to a UConn Huskies team led by Paige Bueckers.
Now 55, the former college and WNBA standout has been actively promoting her book while staying busy recruiting top talent through the transfer portal and high school circuit.
On Friday, Staley shared a heartfelt excerpt from Uncommon Favor on social media.
“I wanted to read to you one of my favorite parts of my new book Uncommon Favor. You can read or listen to it for yourself when it comes out May 20! Get ready!” she wrote.
She then read the following passage:
“It’s a rare gift to find your place in the world as a child. To stumble so early onto the thing that makes you whole. I still remember the antsy feeling I got waiting for my school day to hurry up and end, so I can get back to business. Basketball.”
Staley has a storied playing career, having starred at the University of Virginia, where she racked up 2,135 points over 131 games. She later spent eight seasons in the WNBA with the Charlotte Sting and Houston Comets.
She began her coaching journey at Temple University, amassing a 172-80 record before taking over at South Carolina after the 2007-08 season. While the Gamecocks missed the NCAA Tournament her first three years, they’ve qualified every season since 2010-11.
In addition to coaching and writing, Staley also hosts the podcast NetLife, produced by Just Women’s Sports.
