Díaz later explained he was experiencing cramps—an issue Mets manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed during a Thursday appearance on Foul Territory.
“When we went out to the mound, he told us he was cramping—specifically in his hip—which is why he kept stepping off,” Mendoza said. “I’m glad the umpires recognized what was happening since he was clearly dealing with discomfort. After the game, we checked in with him, and he didn’t seem too worried. Right now, it’s a low-level concern. We’ve got a day off, and we’ll reevaluate tomorrow.”
The Mets are optimistic that Díaz won’t need to miss any time. As Mendoza mentioned, the team will assess his status again on Friday ahead of their upcoming series against the Washington Nationals.

Edwin Díaz, now 31, was once regarded as one of the premier closers in Major League Baseball—arguably the very best at his peak. But after missing the entire 2023 season due to injury, he hasn’t quite returned to his dominant form.
In 2024, Díaz posted a solid 3.52 ERA with 20 saves—decent numbers, but a far cry from his incredible 2022 campaign, when he recorded a 1.31 ERA and 32 saves.
So far, the 2025 season has been rocky for the Mets closer. While he’s picked up six saves, his ERA has ballooned to 4.91. Still, Díaz has the potential to regain elite status, and the Mets are hopeful he’ll bounce back soon.
