With spring practices wrapped up, Alabama football now shifts its focus to the spring transfer portal period, which opens on Wednesday. This window gives players the chance to explore other opportunities if they choose to move on.
On Monday, head coach Kalen DeBoer was asked about his strategy heading into the portal window. While he expressed appreciation for the mindset and commitment of his players, he also offered a word of caution about what players might face if they decide to leave.
“The people you want around—coaches or players—are those who understand and value what they have here at Alabama,” DeBoer said. “From the resources and support staff to the elite coaching and training, it’s a unique environment. This is something not to be taken lightly. We’ve seen examples of players who’ve transferred away and later realized just how special it is here. The grass isn’t always greener.”
A recent example is offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor, who transferred to Iowa last offseason before quickly reversing course and returning to Alabama.
DeBoer also spoke on how he and his staff view their responsibility as the portal opens.
“For us coaches, our job stays the same—we coach, develop, and support our players,” he said. “We’re here to help them grow, to help them understand their role, and to show them that they’re important to this team. When they feel that support and see the value we’re helping them build, it strengthens our connection.”
He added that last year, Alabama didn’t lose any key players during this time and hopes the same holds true this year. The transfer portal window will stay open through April 25.
