The Toronto Blue Jays have kicked off the 2025 season on a high note as they look to rebound from a disappointing performance last year. With their sights set on a return to the playoffs and ending their postseason win drought dating back to 2016, the team made a major statement by locking up star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with a $500 million extension, signaling their commitment to winning now.

Toronto is also on the verge of receiving a significant reinforcement, as outfielder  is nearing his return from injury. According to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith on X, he is slated to begin playing in extended spring training games next week. A Triple-A rehab assignment would follow before he rejoins the big league roster.

Varsho missed the end of last season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff. Still recovering from the injury, he began the 2025 season on the injured list.

Daulton Varsho is close to returning to the Blue Jays

Although Daulton Varsho wasn’t ready in time for Opening Day, there’s a good chance he rejoins the Blue Jays later in April. Toronto has had a solid start to the season, posting an 8-6 record and holding a narrow lead atop the AL East. Still, Varsho’s return would be a welcomed boost.

Originally debuting with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2020 as a rare center fielder/catcher hybrid, Varsho was traded to Toronto before the 2023 season. In his first year with the Blue Jays, he tallied 20 home runs, 61 RBIs, 65 runs, and 16 stolen bases.

In 2024, Varsho followed up with 18 homers, 73 runs scored, and 10 steals over 136 games. His defensive excellence earned him a Gold Glove for his outfield play, and he finished the year with an impressive 5.0 bWAR.

A true power-speed threat with Gold Glove-caliber defense, Varsho is the type of player who can make an impact on both sides of the game. As the Blue Jays battle with the Yankees, Red Sox, and Orioles in a tight AL East race, his return couldn’t come soon enough.
