With the early stages of free agency now complete, the Indianapolis Colts have addressed most of their roster needs. Their moves in the secondary have drawn widespread praise, particularly the signings of safety Cam Bynum from the Vikings and cornerback Charvarius Ward from the 49ers. Offensively, the team is in good shape with star running back Jonathan Taylor and a talented wide receiver group led by Michael Pittman Jr. On defense, DeForest Buckner anchors the interior, leaving quarterback and edge rusher as the two areas still needing clarity.
To address the quarterback position, the Colts signed former Giants starter Daniel Jones, who will compete for the job. Now, their focus has shifted to bolstering the pass rush. While the upcoming NFL Draft offers some intriguing prospects, there’s also a veteran edge rusher still available in free agency who could be a perfect fit.
Three-time Pro Bowler Za’Darius Smith has been identified as an ideal target. Despite being in the latter part of his career, Smith showed he still has plenty left, logging four sacks in just eight games with the Lions last season—good enough to tie for second most on the Colts.
If the Colts don’t land a top edge rusher in the draft, signing Smith on an affordable one-year contract would be a smart move. He’d bring leadership, experience, and immediate impact to the defense. If Smith is open to joining Indianapolis, they should act quickly, as it’s unlikely they’ll find a better value this late in free agency.
