His stint at Nebraska has come to an abrupt end before it ever truly began.
The former Kentucky wide receiver — once a four-star recruit who fast-tracked his college career by reclassifying early — has been dismissed from Nebraska’s football program during spring practice, head coach Matt Rhule confirmed this week.
“We’ve parted ways with Hardley Gilmore IV,” Rhule said during a media session following practice. “We wish him the best moving forward.”
Rhule clarified that the dismissal was due to internal reasons within the team and not linked to any legal trouble.
“It’s nothing outside the program or criminal,” he added. “He just won’t be with us anymore.”
A Brief Glimpse of Potential
Gilmore’s college journey has already seen several turns. The Belle Glade, Florida native enrolled early at Kentucky, bypassing his senior high school season to jumpstart his collegiate career. Despite being one of the youngest players on the roster, he flashed impressive potential in limited snaps.
In 2024, he recorded six catches for 153 yards and a touchdown — averaging a remarkable 25.5 yards per reception. He also notched a 52-yard reception and added a 9-yard rush, hinting at his big-play potential and versatility.
After transferring to Nebraska for what he hoped would be a larger role in a new offensive system, things quickly unraveled. His departure now raises more questions than answers about what went wrong behind the scenes in Lincoln.
What Lies Ahead?
At only 19 years old and full of untapped athletic ability, Gilmore is expected to get another shot elsewhere. His raw speed, playmaking skills, and upside make him an intriguing prospect for programs looking to add talent — if he decides to re-enter the transfer portal.
Though his Nebraska chapter ended prematurely, Gilmore’s football journey is far from over. Whether he lands at a Group of Five school, another Power Five program, or makes a stop at the JUCO level, there will likely be suitors.
For now, though, his path takes another unexpected turn — and Nebraska moves forward without a player many thought could make an immediate impact in 2025.
