The New York Mets still have areas to refine, but they couldn’t have asked for a hotter start from Pete Alonso. The four-time All-Star is off to a strong offensive tear, slashing .292/.433/.750 with three home runs and 10 RBI, helping lift the Mets (4-3) to a 5-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. Alonso made an early impact by launching a 377-foot homer to right field in the first inning, bringing in both himself and Francisco Lindor against Jays ace Kevin Gausman at Citi Field. Later in the game, Alonso was intentionally walked in the sixth and went on to score thanks to a sacrifice fly from Starling Marte.
Juan Soto praised Alonso’s performance after the game, telling SNY, “That’s why they call him the polar bear.” Soto had a solid night as well, doubling in Lindor in the sixth to extend the lead to 3-0, and later scoring on a Brandon Nimmo double.

Soto, who signed a historic 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets this offseason after helping the Yankees win the AL pennant in 2024, is currently batting .240/.387/.440 with one home run and three RBI. The Mets are sitting in second place in the NL East, two games behind the Phillies and half a game ahead of the Marlins. They’ll wrap up the series against Toronto with two more games before returning home for a three-game showdown with Miami, then heading west to take on the Athletics in Sacramento.
