New York Yankees rookie outfielder Jasson Domínguez has secured a regular spot as the team’s left fielder and has made a solid impact. However, concerns remain about his defense in left field, leading manager Aaron Boone to frequently replace him with Trent Grisham in late-game situations.

Making this switch carries a significant risk, as it removes Domínguez’s bat from the lineup in potential high-pressure situations. However, the decision is aimed at preventing defensive lapses from costing the team a close game. Manager Aaron Boone defended his choice to replace Domínguez with a stronger defender late in games.

“I think this is an important part of his development, ensuring Jasson progresses in the best possible way,” Boone explained. “And I’m putting in Trent Grisham, who’s a really good player and performing at a high level right now. Domínguez has given us quality at-bats early on, and over time, I expect I won’t need to make this move. As he gains experience and gets more comfortable, I believe he’ll develop into an excellent defensive left fielder.”

Domínguez struggled defensively during Spring Training as he adjusted from playing center field in the minor leagues to an unfamiliar position in left. The 22-year-old top prospect has the potential to be a five-tool player but remains in the early stages of his development.

Boone’s decision to replace Domínguez late in games may appear to be a matter of trust, but it is likely intended to help the rookie acclimate to his first full season in the majors. As the season progresses, Domínguez will likely remain in the outfield beyond the eighth inning, with the expectation that his defensive improvements will justify the move.

At the same time, the Yankees are looking to maximize Trent Grisham’s value. While his offensive production is below average, he is an elite defensive outfielder. Strengthening the defense by inserting Grisham is a sound baseball decision, though it does come at the cost of Domínguez’s playing time.

It remains to be seen whether this strategy will persist throughout the season or if it is simply a temporary adjustment as Domínguez settles in. Meanwhile, the Yankees will aim to avoid a sweep against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.
