If Indianapolis has been a nightmare for Kentucky, then Chicago might serve as a safe haven for the Wildcats. Just as good things happen in a Survivor Sanctuary, positive outcomes could emerge from Mark Pope’s meeting with highly sought-after transfer Yaxel Lendeborg.
According to KSR’s Jacob Polacheck, Lendeborg entered the transfer portal on Monday and quickly met with Pope, signaling Kentucky’s strong interest in securing a major addition to its roster. With just one year of eligibility remaining, Lendeborg could make a significant impact.
Last season at UAB, Lendeborg averaged an impressive 17.7 points, 11.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.8 blocks, and 1.7 steals per game while playing 33.6 minutes across 37 contests. He was efficient from the field, shooting 52.2% overall, 35.7% from three-point range, and 75.7% from the free-throw line.
On3’s Joe Tipton reports that Kentucky is among the top programs in the race for Lendeborg, adding that a decision could come as early as this weekend. This bodes well for the Wildcats, as they’ve already had an in-person meeting with him.
However, Lendeborg is also testing the NBA Draft process, meaning even if he commits to a school soon, his final decision on whether to play college basketball next season may not be made until May.
That said, if Kentucky is ready to accept his commitment now, it’s a strong indication that they’re confident he will return to the college game. This recruitment is shaping up to be one to watch closely for the Wildcats.
