For the San Francisco 49ers, the biggest priority remaining in the 2025 offseason is securing a contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy.
Despite a relatively quiet offseason, the team has been preparing to offer a significant deal to their franchise quarterback, with ongoing speculation about the potential size of the contract.
Although negotiations with Purdy have begun, the timing of an agreement remains uncertain, given the 49ers’ history of drawn-out contract talks. In the past, extensions for key players such as Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Williams, Nick Bosa, George Kittle, and Deebo Samuel have all taken time, often stretching into training camp as the team seeks the best possible terms.
While discussions with Purdy appear to be progressing well, San Francisco may still extend negotiations to ensure they secure the most favorable deal.
Latest on Purdy’s Contract Talks
General manager John Lynch recently expressed confidence in getting a deal done, telling ESPN’s Nick Wagoner at the NFL’s annual meetings, “I think we’re going to get the deal done. That’s what I believe. We’ll just leave it at that.”
Lynch didn’t provide a specific timeline, but there’s a possibility the extension could be finalized before the start of the team’s offseason program.
“I don’t think it’s too optimistic [to get it done by then],” Lynch said. “I understand why Brock wants that. We’d like that very much, so we just need to find the right balance for both sides.”
However, contract talks can be unpredictable, and Lynch acknowledged the potential for unexpected developments.
“Brock wants to be here. We want Brock here. When that’s the case, these things usually work out,” Lynch added. “Will it happen this offseason? Hopefully. But we’ll see.”
With both sides motivated to reach an agreement, the hope is that the deal will come together sooner rather than later. Given Purdy’s importance to the team, finalizing an extension early would allow him to fully participate in the offseason program with a healthier roster following a rollercoaster 2024 season.
Still, if history is any indication, 49ers contract negotiations can be unpredictable.
