Oklahoma’s roster has undergone significant changes this offseason, with 32 new scholarship players set to make their debut this fall.
One of the most notable shifts came in the quarterback room. Former five-star Jackson Arnold transferred to Auburn, and in his place, Oklahoma brought in John Mateer, the second-ranked quarterback in the transfer portal. However, Mateer wasn’t the only addition. Veteran quarterback Cole Gonzales from Western Carolina also joined the Sooners for his final year of eligibility.
While the starting role appears set, Gonzales embraces his position and is eager to contribute. “I came here to compete. That’s what drove me to come here,” he said. “I knew the situation, but I want to push myself and the team to be better.”
With over 6,000 career passing yards, Gonzales brings valuable experience and leadership to the locker room. Having grown up in a football family—his father, Billy Gonzales, is the wide receivers coach at Florida—he credits his upbringing for shaping his work ethic and understanding of the game. “I’ve been around top players and seen their dedication firsthand,” he noted.
Gonzales’ connection with Oklahoma offensive coordinator Seth Arbuckle played a key role in his decision. He considered Florida, Pitt, and Charlotte before Arbuckle’s call changed his course. “I’ve known him since high school, and our offensive systems are similar, so coming to Oklahoma was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
Even with the likelihood of being a backup, Gonzales is focused on making an impact. With a redshirt available, he has the potential to extend his time in Norman beyond this season.
