The New York Rangers have had a disappointing season, and a proposed trade suggests they could acquire a star forward to strengthen their offense for next season.
Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, which allows fans to create their own trades, one user suggested a major deal in which the Rangers would land star forward from the Seattle Kraken.

This trade would be a significant move, as New York would add a proven scorer in exchange for two young players and a future draft pick. The deal appears beneficial for both teams, with the Rangers looking to contend and the Kraken aiming to add young talent to their roster.
McCann is currently in the third year of his five-year, $25 million contract, meaning he would remain with New York for two more seasons. He would provide much-needed scoring depth in the Rangers’ top six, having posted 18 goals and 33 assists for 51 points in 73 games this season.
On the other hand, Seattle would gain a first-round pick along with two promising young players. Othmann, who has one year left on his entry-level contract, could fit as a middle-six forward for the Kraken. This season, he has recorded one assist in 15 games with the Rangers.
Additionally, Seattle would receive defenseman Zachary Jones, a pending restricted free agent who has spent his entire career in New York. In 42 games this season, Jones has contributed one goal and 10 assists for 11 points.
Rangers Have Interesting Offseason Ahead
A year ago, New York held the NHL’s best record. Now, with fewer than 10 games remaining, they find themselves outside of a playoff spot.
Given their underwhelming season, the Rangers may look to make significant roster changes in the offseason. According to Rangers insider Peter Baugh of The Athletic, the team could consider trading key players such as Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, or Artemi Panarin.
“If the Rangers are going to make major adjustments, they’ll need to move players out. Chris Kreider stands out as a likely candidate, especially since Chris Drury was open to trade discussions in November,” Baugh noted. He also pointed out that moving Zibanejad, who carries an $8.5 million cap hit through 2029-30, or Panarin, earning $11.642 million through 2025-26, would free up significant salary space. However, both players have no-movement clauses and rank among the team’s top three point producers, meaning their departures would create a major gap in scoring.
No matter what direction New York takes, they will be a team to watch this offseason—especially if they fail to secure a playoff spot.
Kraken Made McCann Available
Jared McCann is among Seattle’s top players, but there’s a possibility he could be traded this offseason.
Before the trade deadline, NHL insider Jacob Stoller reported that the Kraken were listening to offers for McCann.
“I’m hearing Jared McCann might be available before the deadline. He’s a versatile scorer who can contribute on the penalty kill and step in at center if needed. The 28-year-old has a $5 million AAV contract running through the 2026-27 season,” Stoller wrote.
While no trade materialized before the deadline, McCann remains a potential trade candidate this summer.
