After finishing last season with a 3-14 record, the Tennessee Titans hold the first overall pick in the upcoming draft. The team is widely expected to select a new quarterback, with growing speculation that Cam Ward will be their choice.
In the meantime, the Titans have added another quarterback to their roster, signing Tim Boyle, as reported by Jim Wyatt on X.
Boyle entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers. Now in his eighth season, the Titans mark his eighth team, having previously spent time with the Packers, Lions, Bears, Jets, Texans, Dolphins, and Giants—though he never made it past Houston’s practice squad.
Last season, the Giants brought in Boyle after parting ways with longtime starter Daniel Jones. He saw limited action as an injury replacement for Tommy DeVito. Now, Boyle joins Tennessee’s quarterback group alongside Will Levis and Brandon Allen.
The Titans are hoarding backup quarterbacks
This move by Tennessee could be a strong indication of the team’s intent to draft Cam Ward. Rather than pursuing a veteran quarterback this offseason, the Titans chose to sign two career backups in Brandon Allen and Tim Boyle. This decision suggests the team is not fully committed to Will Levis as its unquestioned starter and has left the door open for Ward.
The Titans have reportedly explored trading Levis, but there has been little interest from other teams. If Tennessee decides to release him and enter the 2025 season with Ward as the starter, Allen as the backup, and Boyle as the third-string quarterback, the team would absorb a $4.8 million dead cap hit. While not a crippling financial setback, it’s far from ideal. Additionally, relying solely on Ward as the starter could be risky if he struggles in his rookie season.
Another possibility is that Tennessee drafts Ward but retains Levis as a backup. In that case, Levis would slide into a reserve role, Allen would move to third-string, and Boyle could be relegated to the practice squad.
Regardless of the plan, Boyle’s signing raises questions about his role in the team’s quarterback situation. While the terms of his deal haven’t been disclosed, it’s likely a low-cost move. However, how he fits into Tennessee’s long-term quarterback strategy remains uncertain.
