With less than a month remaining before the 2025 NFL Draft, most free agents have secured new teams, but a few are still searching for opportunities. Among them is offensive guard who last played for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite his past Pro Bowl recognition, Scherff hasn’t attracted much interest recently. However, an NFL analyst believes the Cincinnati Bengals could emerge as a potential landing spot.
Anthony Consenza of SB Nation suggests that Scherff could offer immediate value to Cincinnati, filling a guard position while still allowing the team to reinforce the offensive line through the draft.
“While signing Scherff wouldn’t require a massive financial commitment, acquiring a veteran like him could signal an ‘all-in’ move for the Bengals. Their interior offensive line has long been a concern, and Scherff would bring much-needed stability, even if only for a season.
His leadership qualities and ability to mentor younger players should also appeal to Cincinnati as they continue their pursuit of a championship. These are attributes that head coach Zac Taylor has prioritized since taking over the team.”
Despite significant investments in their offensive line in recent years, the Bengals still face challenges in that area. They recently signed star receivers Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase to massive contracts, and edge rusher Trey Hendrickson is due for a pay raise. As a result, they may not have the budget for a major offensive line signing and will likely rely on the draft or cost-effective free agents—making Scherff a viable option.
A first-round pick in 2015, Scherff spent seven seasons with the Washington Commanders, earning five Pro Bowl selections before signing a lucrative deal with Jacksonville in 2022. When he joined the Jaguars, durability was a major concern, as he had not completed a full season since 2016. However, he defied expectations by playing every game during his three-year stint in Jacksonville.
Now 33 years old, Scherff remains a solid player, but his production no longer justified his salary, leading the Jaguars to let him walk in free agency. Since then, he has yet to be strongly linked to any team.
