The New York Yankees are in dire need of starting pitching as they enter the season down three key arms—Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil, and Gerrit Cole. While the team has been linked to numerous trade targets, no concrete deals appear imminent. However, it remains likely that the Yankees will make a move to strengthen their rotation.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently predicted that New York could pull off a blockbuster trade to acquire Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara. His proposal involves the Yankees sending a significant package to Miami in exchange for the 2022 NL Cy Young winner.

Marlins receive: RHP Will Warren, OF Spencer Jones (Yankees’ No. 2 prospect), SS George Lombard Jr. (Yankees’ No. 4 prospect)
Rymer argued that with Gerrit Cole sidelined for the season and Luis Gil out until at least June, acquiring a true ace like Alcántara might be the Yankees’ best chance to salvage their season. Unless the Padres are still open to moving Dylan Cease, Alcántara could be their most viable target.
Coming off Tommy John surgery, Alcántara has looked impressive this spring, throwing 12.1 scoreless innings while regaining his velocity. Although the trade would require the Yankees to part with top prospects, Alcántara’s contract—guaranteed through 2026 with a $21 million club option for 2027—makes him an attractive long-term addition.
One potential downside is that moving Warren for Alcántara wouldn’t address the Yankees’ overall pitching depth, leaving them with a rotation that still includes Marcus Stroman and Carlos Carrasco. An alternative could be swapping in left-handed prospect Brock Selvidge instead of Warren. If necessary, Miami could also push for an additional high-upside prospect to finalize the deal.
