Mike Vrabel was thoroughly impressed after hosting Stefon Diggs for a visit, leading to the four-time Pro Bowler signing a three-year, $69 million contract with $26 million guaranteed. While the full contract details have yet to emerge, it’s likely structured with flexibility, allowing the Patriots an out if Diggs struggles with injuries or fails to return to top form.
Regardless of Diggs’ potential impact on second-year quarterback Drake Maye, this deal represents a significant overpay by New England. Although he’s expected to be ready for Week 1, it will take time for him to regain his rhythm. With Diggs turning 32 at the start of the season, the Patriots are racing against time.
Meanwhile, the Commanders prioritized youth and versatility by acquiring Deebo Samuel, who brings the dynamic skill set they lacked alongside Terry McLaurin last season. While Washington’s 2024 receiving group was serviceable, general manager Adam Peters recognized that it wasn’t enough to push the team toward a Super Bowl run.
With limited trade assets remaining after acquiring Samuel and elite left tackle Laremy Tunsil, Washington’s best bet for adding another impact receiver is through the draft. Diggs was never a realistic option for Washington, given the presence of both Samuel and McLaurin. Managing targets between two high-level receivers is feasible, but adding another—especially on such a costly deal—would have been nearly impossible.
