According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, he exercised his opt-out clause, prompting the move. The 39-year-old signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Feb. 18. He previously pitched for Boston in 2021, recording a 7-3 record, a 4.21 ERA, and 11 saves. Now a free agent, he will seek a new opportunity elsewhere.
Ottavino spent last season with the New York Mets, where he posted a 2-2 record, a 4.34 ERA, and 70 strikeouts. In 2023, he went 1-7 with a 3.21 ERA for the Mets. Teams in need of an experienced reliever may consider adding him to bolster their bullpen depth.
