Reds Top Catcher and the Cincinnati Reds reached an agreement Thursday on a three-year contract worth $14.925 million, securing an additional $11.5 million in guaranteed earnings.
He was acquired from the New York Yankees in December in exchange for reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson, initially avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $3.425 million deal. Without the extension, the 32-year-old would have been eligible for free agency following this year’s World Series.
His new contract includes salaries of $5.25 million for both 2026 and 2027, along with a $6.5 million club option for 2028, which includes a $1 million buyout.
Trevino is set to open the season as the Reds’ primary catcher, as Tyler Stephenson remains sidelined with an oblique injury. Stephenson, who last played on March 11, was scratched the next day and underwent an MRI on March 13.
Last season, Trevino was limited to 74 games, posting a .215 batting average with eight home runs and 28 RBIs. In 2022, he was named an All-Star for the first time, playing a career-high 115 games, winning a Gold Glove, and batting .248 with personal bests of 11 home runs and 43 RBIs.
Over seven major league seasons with the Texas Rangers and Yankees, Trevino has compiled a .236 batting average, 32 home runs, and 141 RBIs.
