The NFL’s free agency period is almost two weeks old, and teams are starting to finalize their rosters. With most of the major signings already completed, any teams looking to add significant contributors will likely have to rely on the draft or explore the trade market. For the Los Angeles Chargers, the wide receiver position was a major issue last season, with the team struggling to get consistent production outside of rookie Ladd McConkey. While many expected the Chargers to seek reinforcements in free agency, the only addition to their receiving corps has been Mike Williams, whose best days may be behind him. As a result, the Chargers’ best chance to improve at receiver may lie in the draft.
However, Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton suggested that the team should consider trading for San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Aiyuk, a former first-round pick, actually requested a trade from San Francisco last year amid a contract dispute, although he ultimately secured a contract extension.
Despite Aiyuk’s potential, there has been little indication that San Francisco is willing to trade him, and even if they were, it’s unlikely the Chargers would pursue the deal. The team already passed on a trade for DK Metcalf earlier this offseason and declined opportunities to sign Davante Adams or Cooper Kupp, mainly due to the financial commitments involved.
Aiyuk is entering the second year of a four-year, $120 million contract, which would likely be too much for the Chargers to absorb. Although Los Angeles missed out on several top receivers early in free agency, they still have the option to address the position in a deep 2025 draft class.
