The Minnesota Vikings still have options at quarterback, but they are pushing the limits on their potential ceiling at the position. With J.J. McCarthy set to take over as the starter, the team is exploring backup options, including the possibility of adding Carson Wentz.
Wentz, now 32, spent the 2024 season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He started in Week 18, completing 58.8% of his passes for just 98 yards in a 38-0 loss to the Denver Broncos.
“The Vikings will need to keep searching for a veteran backup to support McCarthy, as several potential candidates have signed elsewhere,” ESPN’s Kevin Seifert noted on March 19. Currently, Brett Rypien is the only other quarterback on the roster. Among the available options are seasoned veterans Joe Flacco and Carson Wentz.
Several sources have connected Joe Flacco to the Vikings, while Carson Wentz has been mentioned less frequently.
If signed, Wentz would be the most experienced quarterback in Minnesota’s locker room, with a Pro Bowl selection and involvement in two Super Bowl runs, including a championship win in 2017.
He would also become the latest reclamation project for Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell.
Wentz is familiar with a version of the Vikings’ offensive system, having played for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023 under head coach Sean McVay.
