After spending most of the MLB offseason as a free agent, he has finally found a new home.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the former Boston Red Sox outfielder has agreed to a $1.5 million deal with the Atlanta Braves. ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that he will start the season in the minor leagues to gain playing time, while the Braves evaluate his progress.
He played for the New York Yankees last season, struggled at the plate with a .233 batting average and a .647 OPS. Despite his down year, he did not receive any MLB offers until Atlanta stepped in, a fact that surprised two-time American League MVP Aaron Judge.
“I am surprised,” Judge told The Athletic. “He’s such a great player. He brings so much value and versatility to a team.”
Earlier in the offseason, Heyman reported that the Pittsburgh Pirates considered offering Verdugo an $8 million contract before ultimately signing Tommy Pham instead.
Verdugo now joins a Braves team that finished the 2024 season with an 89-73 record and reached the postseason before being eliminated in the National League Wild Card Series.
