Earlier this offseason, the Boston Red Sox signed free agent Alex Bregman in what should have been a straightforward improvement for the team.

However, within days, the move stirred up unexpected controversy. Boston initially planned for Bregman to take over at third base while Rafael Devers transitioned to the designated hitter role, keeping the middle infield open for top prospects Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell when they’re ready. But Devers resisted the switch, insisting he is a third baseman.

If Devers refuses to move and the Red Sox accommodate him, they’ll still manage. Bregman could shift to second base without much issue—except for Campbell.

With Devers at third and Bregman at second, there would be no clear spot for Campbell, even if he proves ready for the majors. As an athletic infielder, he isn’t an ideal fit for the DH role, and Mayer appears to be Boston’s future shortstop. While the Red Sox would likely find a solution, Devers’ reluctance to change positions affects more than just him—it could also complicate the development of a top prospect.
