Former Boston Red Sox first-round picks has agreed to a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers and has joined the reigning World Michael Chavid Series champions for spring training as a non-roster invitee.
Chavis, selected 26th overall by the Red Sox in the 2014 MLB Draft, was once among Boston’s top prospects. He made an impressive MLB debut in 2019, posting a .254/.322/.444 slash line with 18 home runs in 382 plate appearances. However, his production declined over the following seasons, with a .231/.265/.382 line in 804 plate appearances.
The 28-year-old last appeared in the majors in 2023 as a part-time player for the Washington Nationals. He spent the 2024 season in Triple-A, splitting time between the Chicago White Sox and Seattle Mariners organizations. With Triple-A Tacoma, he finished strong, slashing .290/.366/.485 over 191 plate appearances.
Chavis offers defensive versatility, capable of playing first, second, and third base, as well as the corner outfield positions. While he’s unlikely to make the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster, he provides valuable depth and could be a solid Triple-A option in case of injuries.
Red Sox Add Outfielder Trayce Thompson
Shortly after Chavis signed with the Dodgers, the Red Sox added former Los Angeles outfielder Trayce Thompson on a minor league contract. Thompson will participate in Boston’s spring training as a non-roster invitee.
A second-round pick by the White Sox in 2009, Thompson played parts of four seasons with the Dodgers between 2016 and 2023. Over seven major league seasons, he has suited up for five different teams. Like Chavis, he spent all of 2024 in Triple-A, splitting time between the Mets and Cubs organizations.
Thompson, the younger brother of NBA star Klay Thompson, will add depth to Boston’s outfield mix, which includes Ceddanne Rafaela and Rob Refsnyder, along with top prospects Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Jhostynxon Garcia. His signing brings the Red Sox’s total number of non-roster invitees for spring training to 21.
